Why are we criminalizing childhood independence? – The Washington Post

Standard

I wanted to share an article with you that I found especially interesting. Ms. Dvorak centered her article on the lost freedom we had as children growing up here in the United States, in a different time.

Recently and for only a short time my two oldest grandsons lived within 5 blocks of their Papa & me. It only happened a couple of times, but we arranged with their mom for the boys to walk over together from their house to ours.

The boys are both 8 years old but together & with Mom following the first time, they did it!

You could see the excitement and feeling of accomplishment in their young faces. They looked like they had flown to the moon.

Unfortunately, (for me) they moved to their new home last month and while only about 5 miles away (a distance my sister & I rode several times a week in the summer to go swimming at the local high school) in a city the size of Phoenix, Arizona, it will probably be a very long time before they will be able to venture over here again…BUT, it was fun while it lasted!
